✨ My Why… and Why The Lounge Exists ✨
A few people have asked recently how The Lounge came about.
The truth is, it wasn’t part of some grand business plan.
It was the result of life taking me on a journey I never expected.
Before Covid, I ran one of the only singles clubs of its kind in Europe. It combined matchmaking, coaching, secret suppers, relationship retreats and weekly events, helping thousands of people connect in a world that was already becoming increasingly disconnected. I was also filming one of the biggest dating shows in the UK.
Then Covid arrived.
Like so many others, I watched years of work disappear almost overnight. Around the same time, I stepped away from the London matchmaking club I’d built after selling it to another company. I stepped away from MAFS UK, I then spent four incredible years working on a major project with one of the largest matchmaking firms in the USA.
The work was exciting. The opportunities were incredible. But something was changing.
I found myself rebuilding London events and travelling regularly, whilst slowly realising that although my work could take me anywhere, my heart wanted to be closer to home.
My coaching, VIP matchmaking and relationship retreats could be run from anywhere. For years I’d partnered with Champneys to host retreats, but post-Covid the costs were becoming out of reach for many of the people who genuinely needed support.
At the same time, life had thrown me a few personal curveballs too.
After a long and painful divorce, I’d met Steve. Covid had knocked the stuffing out of me, if I’m honest, and so many people around me were struggling with loneliness, anxiety and a lack of meaningful connection.
I wasn’t just seeing it in my clients.
I was feeling it too.
I desperately wanted to belong to a community again.
Steve gave me the courage to find that connection.
Then, completely unexpectedly, The Pamper Lounge came up for sale.
Most people saw a small local business.
I saw possibility.
A place to host retreats, coaching and workshops.
A place to continue bringing people together.
A place where singles, couples, friends and families could make memories.
A place where people could laugh more, connect more and simply enjoy life.
Fast forward 22 months.
The friendships formed here have blown me away.
The conversations.
The support.
The tears.
The celebrations.
The laughter.
So much laughter.
What has grown inside these four walls has become more than I ever imagined.
On any given week, you’ll find children’s pamper parties filling the lounge with excitement and giggles. Birthday celebrations, baby showers and hen parties creating memories that last long after the photos have been taken.
You’ll find groups of women gathering for brunch, catching up over coffee, sharing life, supporting each other and laughing until their cheeks hurt.
You’ll find couples escaping for a drink, a pizza, a cocktail or a date night together, taking time away from busy lives to reconnect.
You’ll find workshops, support groups, book clubs, coaching sessions and events bringing together people who may never otherwise have met.
And this month we opened our garden terrace.
The biggest compliment we’ve received?
People keep telling us it feels like they’ve stepped off on holiday somewhere abroad.
That was entirely intentional.
Life can be hard.
Sometimes you don’t need a plane ticket.
Sometimes you just need a beautiful place, good company and a couple of hours where the world feels a little lighter.
At 55, when many people are beginning to think about retirement, building The Lounge has been one of the biggest professional challenges of my life.
I’ve built businesses.
Bought businesses.
Sold businesses.
Closed businesses.
But this one feels different.
This one feels personal.
It has a heartbeat.
It’s not a lock-up-and-leave business.
Every event, every party, every workshop, every coffee, every cup of tea served to someone who walks in not quite knowing what to expect and leaves feeling at home reminds us why we’re here.
In a world that can often feel rushed, lonely and disconnected, this little slice of loveliness feels more important than ever.
And for us, it genuinely feels like we’re only just getting started.
